Realms of Despair is the main SMAUG implementation.
It is currently in its seventh year of development from the original Merc2.1 code base.

There have been over 40,000 downloads of the SMAUG code, and a good number of stable running SMAUG muds exist.  There is also a very active Mailing List with well over 300 subscribers.

The release of version 1.8 is HERE! With many bugfixes as well as important and useful new code features.

SMAUG, being a derivative of Merc, is also a derivative of DikuMud.
